First visit
Many people feel a little uneasy about going to a church for the first time. If you wish you can have a sneak preview of what the church looks like inside. Here is what you need to know.
- Just turn up! There is no dress code – some dress smartly, others are casual. Do what makes you feel comfortable.
- You will be welcomed by a steward at the front door of the church. You may be handed a leaflet on your way in, possibly a church bulletin that keeps the congregation informed of the latest church news.
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask either the steward who welcomed you, or go to the welcome desk, which is just inside the church on the left hand side.
- If you have children or teenagers with you, now would be a good time to register them for Whitewater at the welcome desk.
- If you need the toilet at any time, you will find the toilets in the entrance lobby to the church hall, next door to the main church building. There is a disabled toilet there.
- You can choose to sit anywhere you like. There are usually seats available downstairs. On Sunday mornings we also use the gallery, which you can reach via the staircase on the left hand side of the entrance lobby.
- You should find a Bible underneath the seat in front of you, which you are welcome to use during the service.
- We usually stand up to sing, and to sit down at all other times. We aren’t in the habit of kneeling to pray – we just sit with our heads bowed and our eyes closed. The minister will tell you when to stand up and sit down, and you can’t go very far wrong by just copying everyone else.
- See details of a typical service for more on what happens during the service.
- After the service finishes please go through to the hall, have a (free) cup of fairtrade tea or coffee, and introduce yourself. We’d like to meet you.
Our monthly guest services are particularly suitable for a first visit.
We hope that you will so enjoy your first visit that you make a return visit.
Most people find it takes time and effort to get to know Christianity, but that it is very worthwhile. Take as long as you need!
